postheadericon Thoughtful Eating Opens You To Pleasure and Better Health

If you’ve been in the habit of overeating, you may not realize that eating should cease before discomfort takes place. While you may love the food you are eating and want to experience more of it, it is a shift in perspectives and priorities that helps the idea click into place. It will help you live with more health and a better sense of nutrition.

Especially when one is at a buffet or a nice restaurant with really good food, it is easy to think that you should keep eating to enjoy the situation. If you leave feeling uncomfortable for hours afterwards, however, you have not treated yourself in the highest regard, nor have you made the most of the situation. It is better to eat what feels good, remember it fondly, and continue to feel good physically and emotionally. With the discomfort of overeating, often self denigrating thoughts are quick to follow. The best way to honor yourself and the situation is to eat very slowly.

Take note of all your senses as you do. Notice the different colors and the natural beauty of the ingredients that are composed on the plate. Did the chef do something special to showcase the natural essence of the ingredient? Smell everything. Take it in. Make it an experience. As you thoughtfully gather your first forkful, get the perfect proportion of elements onto your fork. Do not make the bite too big. Slowly chew it, letting the different tastes and textures open up in your mouth.

You cannot make a meal last forever and eating more will not change that, it will only make you regret the experience. The best way to show love for yourself and to milk the most out of a spectacular moment is to pay attention to it. Do not think about anything else but your present experience. The shift from frantic overeater to one who truly allows pleasure of food to be experienced is also a shift from self ignorance to self love, which is the biggest factor in being the healthier person you want to be.

Many people who eat emotionally use the reasoning that they do so out of love for food and eating. The paradox here, however, is that when one uses food as a drug, they are not actually paying any attention to the experience of eating. Quickly gulping down pizza and a large soda while watching the tense moments on a reality television show is not loving food and it is not treating yourself well. Healthy eating is more than about good nutrition, it is also about paying attention to what you are doing, and how it feels, which is the biggest factor needing to change when someone is struggling with a weight issue.

Most overweight people know what is and is not healthy to eat and that exercise is good. The easiest way to make healthy nutritional habits stick is to add good habits without forcing the ones that don’t serve one as well. If you are too full on healthy food, you can only eat small portions of the fattier foods, and hopefully, they will be savored instead of swallowed whole.

An easy way to make positive change is by adding vegetables into your daily routine. Before eating your main dish, eat a large salad consisting mostly of spinach. Spinach is high in fiber and that along with a glass of water will fill you up. Use very little dressing and a light vinaigrette is best. When you eat your main meal, you will be mostly full on healthy, light foods. When you do bite into the main event, you will not feel deprived because you are allowing yourself to eat as much as you comfortably want. Once you realize that you have hit a point where further eating will cause discomfort, it is the time to stop. Stopping even a little earlier is better, but until you have more practice at getting in tune with your body’s cues and communications to you, that is a pretty clear, definite place. You will miss it if you are eating too quickly or are distracted by anything else. The moment often happens suddenly.

postheadericon Trust Yourself With Your New Healthy Habits

If you are trying to live a lifestyle that is much more healthy and based on making nutrition a priority, then you have probably made a lot of changes in your old, unhealthy routines to make that happen. Changing habits that seem so ingrained to who you are can be daunting and once you have done them you feel like you are on top of the world. The most difficult thing is when you find yourself in an old setting that you have not experienced many times, if at all since you have incorporated your new changes. When you regress to a time and a place when you did not like yourself as much, it can be a hard thing to accept and forgive yourself for. Parties are one arena when people may feel like they have lost control of their new self-control, making one panic as they think about becoming the person they just evolved from being.

It does not have to be that dramatic, though. You can trust yourself. If you can slow down and take an inventory on how you feel, you will not go overboard. Practice the same skills at a party that you do at home, a restaurant, or the grocery store. Fill up on fresh, healthy, light foods and have a small taste of a few richer items that appeal to you. You do not want to live feeling deprived and you do not have to, nor do you have to be an overbearing warden, always waiting to see yourself fail. Relax and remember that eating well feels good, and feeling good is the most important aspect of your process.

You can also entertain at your own place so that you are in a comfortable setting with offerings that you like. For a barbeque, consider salmon sliders with teriyaki sauce and grilled pineapple. You can serve it along side an Asian styled slaw. Heat 2-3 tablespoons of rice vinegar and add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar until dissolved. Then pour and toss over sliced Napa cabbage. Your guests will be impressed and you will feel secure.

postheadericon Know What Healthful Eating Means

Long grain rice from the United States

Many children and even today’s adults cannot even fathom that in centuries past, fruits like oranges, bananas, and apples were delicacies that kings may have only had the privilege of eating once in a lifetime when explorers and spice seekers returned back with them from their exotic locales. That we can go to the store and purchase one of each at any time for only a couple of dollars is unthinkable in that context. Today we have so many options and a variety of fresh foods, including a few servings of fruits and many servings of vegetables daily, is the healthiest way to live.

Grains are also an important part of our diets as well but the idea of what grains really are has become completely distorted in recent times. The American Food Pyramid guide, which is distributed by the Agriculture Department within the United States Government, recommends that six to eight, one ounce servings of grains be eating by the average adult. This recommends that whole grains be eaten as a part of the entire grain category, but very few people eat whole grains at all. While we were once told that pasta, white rice, overly sugared cereal, and white bread counted as grains, more and more people today are starting to understand that grains need to be as unprocessed as possible to glean the maximum amount of nutritional benefit from them. Brown rice is a great way to fill up for very little money in a healthy way. Brown rice can be flavored with chicken stock and other seasonings to add zest and robustness to it. Brown rice can be delicious when prepared well and it is a much healthier alternative to white rice, especially when the white rice is made with fats. Whole oats and other grains like barley are options that will serve you well.

Proteins are best left lean. The white meat of turkey and chicken is very healthy. Fish is a good choice as well. For vegetarians there is tempeh and soy products. Beans are a great addition nutritionally and economically to any diet plan.

If your young toddler or even your older child is a picky eater, do not fret. You are in the same boat with many parents across the nation. Exposing children to a variety of different foods and cultures through food is a rewarding gift to bestow upon your children, but they often do not appreciate it. Instead of sushi, they prefer chicken nuggets. Forget the fois gras, kids like French fries. But there are ways to get your kids to eat a more balanced and well rounded diet.

Dipping is the fun act of taking a food and dunking it into a sauce like substance. It adds action, fun, and play to an otherwise boring and dull meal time. Children who would not ordinarily try a food are much more likely to take a shot at it when dipping it into sauces are involved. Also, even if the food is one that your children have tried time and time again but still assert that they hate it, adding a dipping component may make them reconsider. If they have a tasty substance in which to dunk those otherwise lack luster foods, they may be much more likely to expand their nutritional and culinary horizons.

If you cannot for the life of you get your children to eat a healthy breakfast, consider whole wheat pancakes or waffles with real maple syrup. The artificial stuff is mostly composed of high fructose corn syrup, but if you start them at a younger age, they will develop a taste for the real maple deal. It is more nutritious and will give their palates a more sophisticated experience that may translate to a more adventurous culinary spirit in later circumstances.

Yogurt is a dipping dream. You can use strawberry yogurt as a dipper for apples, strawberries, grapes, melon slices, and just about any other seasonal fruit. Kids love the creamy taste and texture and you will love that it’s healthy!

Ranch dressing is another life saver. Kids will be more likely to eat veggies dipped in Ranch. Try carrots, celery, and cucumbers for an easy, painless introduction.

postheadericon Balance Out Weighs Diet Fanaticism

There has been a lot of confusion in recent times as to what constitutes a healthy and nutritious diet. Fad diets surface and are found to be very successful by a few outspoken proponents, before being debunked as futile by the masses and falling into dietary purgatory. Diets are the way to lose weight quickly, but one’s adherence to the principles of the diet are mandatory in maintaining the weight lost that they deliver. Add to it that they are often very difficult to follow, and you have a recipe that is not spelled out to deliver success. Additionally, many of these fad diets do not provide the appropriate proportion of nutrients or give adequate amounts of energy to the consumer, which means that they have a difficult time executing their day to day tasks while following them, and that is before you add the extra exertion of an exercise regime.

Instead of going to unnecessary and ultimately, completely unfruitful extremes, why not try a more balanced and reasonable approach? Eating a diet that is balanced and packed full of nutrition will provide one with energy and mood benefits that will see them through the day’s requirements. Additionally, a balanced diet, while composed mostly of healthy and beneficial, life sustaining foods, does not mean that one has to live a life of deprivation only to break and binge, followed by guilt and self deprecation. Treats and any other desired food can be consumed in moderation in a healthy and whole, balanced nutrition plan.

The best basis for just about any diet is vegetables. If vegetables are the largest component of your diet, then you are doing very well. Vegetables are packed with nutrients and vitamins and can give you much of the nutritional components that your body needs. Protein is also essential. Proteins that are lean, meaning low in fat, are best. Fish is ideal and poultry is a great choice as well. Grains are excellent for your body, but only if they are unprocessed, whole grains. Brown rice, steel cut oats, barley, and spelt are all terrific whole grain options.

Beef farming has been criticized as being hazardous to the environment. The cattle have been shown to have a debilitating effect on the planet. Additionally, many people who have switched from meat eating lifestyles to a lifestyle of vegetarianism (which is a diet without any meat or meat products) or even veganism (a diet without any animal produced by products, such as dairy or eggs) say that they experience more energy and vitality having cut meat out of their lives. Most people who eat meat do not consider vegetarianism as a feasible lifestyle for them, and if that is the conclusion that they decide on, that is fine. But many individuals and families have begun to adopt the habit of eating as vegetarians for at least one night weekly. In doing so, they clean their systems from meat and have a chance to eat other proteins that are possibly much more nutritious. Vegetarian proteins are quite often more cost effective as well, which makes it a great idea to adopt, particularly for a family on a budget.

You don’t have to go crazy with all of the unusual vegetarian proteins to experience the benefit of once weekly vegetarianism. While tempeh and tofu may not be for you, you will not know until you have tried them when they are prepared at their best. Give the different options a chance and you may find that you like them.

Most people like beans in at least one dish. Vegetarian chili is great for families. Black bean soup is delicious and nutritious. Consider lentils as an easy addition to your family’s diet as well.

Tofu is particularly easy to adapt as it adopts any flavors it comes in contact with during the preparation and cooking processes. Asian stir-frys or fried rice are a great place to substitute tofu that has been cooked with the other foods. Potstickers are another way to painlessly incorporate it. If that doesn’t work for you, try a smoothie made with lots of berries and some silken tofu added. It’s packed with protein and makes for a nice smoothie texture.

postheadericon The Benefits of Online Medical Information

For many of us, living on a budget means cutting back to the bare necessities. We don’t go out to eat as much as we would like, we stay in when we could be at a movie. This also includes watching our credit card debt by using prepaid credit cards instead of planning on paying it all back later. This same sense of frugality extends to the way we seek out medical information. Many have turned to the Internet instead of heading directly to the doctors whenever they are feeling out of sorts. Web based medical information can help you pin point your acute systems in preparation to go to a physician. The web is a fantastic resource to find a possible diagnosis and treat minor illnesses and wounds, but should not be used to replace or even supersede a visit to a doctor or emergency room.

One of the best and most readily used sites for medical information is webmd.com. Web MD has been the most trusted and visited Medical Information Services site since 2005. With over 1,400 employees and a governing board of physicians, Web MD strives to be the most reliable and comprehensive health site on the Internet. Web MD works to discover the root of the symptom first. For example, if you have been feeling abnormally fatigued you can type in that symptom and choose from a number of different portals that it pulls up. From there a list of articles and topics appear that help you in your efforts to narrow down the symptoms to a single cause. Web MD also provides articles on safe remedies to try.

After you have tried some of the home remedies, if the problem persists or gets worse, you should see a physician. Only they can give you the most accurate medical information and write out a prescription.

postheadericon How Healthy is America?

Americans have a strong tendency to be proud of their status in the world. However, there are some areas in which United States citizens are not precisely world leaders. Among other things, this includes the general health of the population. Vague statistics have been thrown out in popular media, including the documentary Sicko by Michael Moore, but the details remain unclear for many Americans. Just how healthy are we?

The last time a large study was done on the topic was in 2000, when the World Health Organization compiled a large number of valuable statistics on the health of major countries around the globe. In this study, the United States was ranked as the thirty-seventh most healthy country. But how was this number attained?

One of the major statistics used was the number of preventable deaths per 100,000 members of the population. The Untied States ranked at number fourteen, having 110 preventable deaths per 100,000. The top three were France, at sixty-five; Japan and Australia, at seventy-one; and Spain, at seventy-four.

Another statistic used was the healthy life expectancy of the general population. The United States took the twenty-four spot by averaging seventy years of age. The top three spots belonged to Japan, at seventy-four; Australia, at seventy-three point two; and France, at seventy-three point one.

These, as well as other statistics, were compared to the total spending per capita on health care for the population of each country. The United States had the second highest expenditure. Other countries mentioned above as the most healthy ranked much lower. Specifically, France ranked at tenth, Australia ranked at twenty-ninth, Japan ranked at thirty-ninth, and Spain ranked at fourtieth.

The reasons for this “poor comparative health” are complex. While it is certainly true that other countries have more effective public health care programs and better general health care, the lifestyle of United States citizens must also not be discounted. Longer work weeks, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, reliance on fast food, high levels of obesity, and higher general stress all lead to a higher occurrence of preventable diseases. Still, we didn’t rank last. Burma took that spot.
